Summary : A World War II pillbox located on the west bank of the River Adur at RAF Shoreham. The pillbox was constructed in 1940-41, built of brick and reinforced concrete and formed part of the airfield defences. It is brick-shuttered and has an anti-aircraft section to one side. A field visit in 1997 found the pillbox to be extant.This pillbox was mapped from historical aerial photograhs.
More information : Brick-shuttered pillbox with anti-aircraft section to side, with fields of fire across Shoreham airfield and across River Adur to E. Access to pillbox interior down steps. Access to AA section via pillbox mounting for AA unit. with PLAN drawn on form.Unique pillbox type, facing E to cover River Adur; also part of airfield defences.On the W bank of the River Adur at Shoreham Airport. (1) The structural remains of this pillbox were seen at TQ 2076 0535 and were mapped as part of the English Heritage: South Downs NMP project from historical aerial photographs. (2)
