More information : [SE 095 217] A Roman altar, dated to A.D. 205 and preserved at Trinity College, Cambridge, was dug up in 1597 behind a house in Greetland called the Thick Hollins. This house has been identified at Bank Top. It has been suggested that this may be the site of a Roman Fort but an excavation in 1937 gave negative results. The sole find was a flint scraper. (1-3) "Bank Top", at SE 09422159, is situated on the southern edge of a high plateau at the confluence of two valleys. Any former area of occupation must necessarily be sited to the north of the present buildings on land now under pasture (Area centred SE 094217). Nothing of Archaeological significance is visible, though the site as a whole is eminently suitable for Roman settlement. No further finds from the site have been reported locally. (4)
