St Mary And St Cuthberts Priory

Summary : Augustinian priory founded circa 1120, moved to Bolton in 1154-5 (See SE 05 SE 1). Much of the material of the old Priory was used in the construction of Embsay Kirk, built about 1780. The outer wall of the vaulted cellar is about a yard thick and the arched roofs of several outhouses contain re-used stones. In 1889, workmen cutting a walk at the south end of the house discovered portions of 3 walls and several skeletons covered by a slab ornamented with a cross.

A priory of Austin canons was founded at Embsay in 1120 but moved to Bolton 1154-5. A dependent cell continued on the site, and the foundations are still visible. (2-4)

There are now no visible remains of the Priory, and its site, at SE 01085435, could not be verified. (5)
