Summary : Blackburn Station was built in 1888 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, replacing the town's first station, which was opened in 1846 by the Blackburn and Preston Railway. Listed Grade II, the frontage building is of two storeys in brick with stone dressings and a central clock; an extensive glazed canopy completes the facade to the Boulevard. on the site of an earlier station. Behind the frontage building and reached by a subway stands a substantial two-span train shed covering buildings and platforms at a higher level; this part of the station is much in excess of current railway needs and is not listed. In recent years the frontage building has been cleaned, repointed and repaired; the roof has been stripped and re-covered in ribbed metal sheeting similar to its 1888 finish; the canopy has been repaired and re-glazed. Further improvements are now (2000) underway to the platform-level infrastructure. Listed Grade II. |
