Monument Number 1131106

Hob Uid: 1131106
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Selworthy, Minehead Without
Grid Ref : SS9219848645
Summary : A Medieval/Post Medieval field system is visible together with quarrying as earthworks on aerial photographs. The field system is located to the west of West Myne and comprises numerous field banks many of which have subsequently been levelled by either modern ploughing or Second World War military activities (SS 94 NW 64). To the west of the field system is an area of quarrying which seem to have been used as ballast for facing field banks.
More information : At Western Brockholes, a narrow precipitous spur west of West Myne, are a number of small stone quarries and a redundant field boundary. The quarries seem to have been for ballast for facing field banks whilst the field boundary marks a failed attempt to enclose the end of the spur. The quarries are at SS 91708 49006 and SS 91840 48866 whilst the field boundary is at SS 91860 48960. (1)

The field bank referred to above (1) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The photographs show that this field bank is part of a larger Medieval/Post Medieval field system. The field system is centred at SS 9226 4869 to the west of West Myne farm and comprises numerous field banks many of which have subsequently been levelled by either modern ploughing or Second World War military activities (SS 94 NW 64).
