Summary : Roman road running from Aldborough to Catterick Bridge. Largely followed by modern arterial road (A1) and parish boundaries.
More information : Dere Street. RR 8b Roman Road. Aldborough - Catterick Bridge.
The main northern road from York RR 8a (LINEAR 290) continued upon the same north-west alignment through Aldborough Roman Town (SE 46 NW 8) to Catterick.
For the first two miles past Kirby Hill the course is largely untracable through fields, although partly marked by parish boundaries. Then the Great North road takes up the line until close to Catterick with parish boundaries following the course continuously for nine miles. The road is remarkably straight for very long distances and is often well raised, by 2-3 feet or more in places, although the present road has been greatly altered and modernized.
At Leeming Bar the road crosses Bedale Beck and makes a reversed curve, apparently on the original course. The alignment beyond the crossing is almost a continuation of the previous line. South of Catterick village the present road bears away to the east, but the Roman road is clearly visible as a large agger through Bainesse and to the west side of Catterick village. The road has been seen on air photographs going straight past the west side of the racecourse to the Roman settlement of Cataractonium (SE 29 NW 3), just before the River Swale was reached.
The Antonine Iters I,II and IV all follow this road and give the mileage in good agreement with the actual distance.
For continuation of Dere Street northward see RR 8c (LINEAR 299)(1)
