More information : [SE 15786474] Chapel [GT] (Remains of). (1) A chapel and priest's house at Bewerley are scheduled ancient monuments. The chapel was built about 1500 and enlarged in 1679 to house a school, the priest's house known as the Tudor House, is of late 16th/early 17th century date. (2-3) The chapel has now been renovated, and is used as a private residence known as Bewerley Grange (a) See G.P AO63/217/5 for N.W. aspect. The priest's house, situated at SE 1598 6470, is in good condition, but is of little architectural merit. See GP AO63/117/8 for southern aspect. (4) The chapel was restored in 1965 and reconsecrated as a chapel of ease. It probably pertained to Bewerley Grange and was either built or restored by Abbot Huby (1494-1526) of Fountains, whose initials are to be seen in 3 places on the exterior wall. (5) Chapel, 15th/16th century with the west end rebuilt in 1679 and 1820, and the Priest's House or Bewerley Old Hall, built circa 1600 by Father Hicks, are both grade 2*. (6)
