Rodger Gate

Hob Uid: 60147
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Cropton
Grid Ref : SE7777089380
Summary : An alleged Medieval trackway running through the complex of Roman earthworks known as Cawthorn Camps (SE 79 SE 45).
More information : SE 777893 to SE 788904. Rodere Gate. A Medieval track-
way that crosses Cawthorn Roman Camps. (1)

(SE 77778938 to 78378999). This track is known as "Rodger Gate".
The name "Rodere Gate", previously applied by Ordnance Survey
is due to an error in transposition from R. H. Hayes private 6" sheet.(2)

The RCHME describe the Portergate as having the appearance of a 'packhorse track', 3m wide at the top but only 1m wide at the base. (3)

The Portergate's course through Cawthorn Camps has been mapped by photogrammetric survey using large scale air photographs (4). This survey forms part of a wider research project (1998-2002) investigating Cawthorn Camps. In addition to the air photographic work, this research has included geophysical survey, topographic survey of Fort A and Annexe B, and two seasons of excavation, although no trenching of the Portergate was undertaken. (5-6) The date and function of this feature still remains uncertain; in places it is curiously deep and narrow at its base and is less convincing as a trackway. (4-6)
