| Summary : Kew Gardens Station opened on 1st January 1869 by the London South Western Railway. The main station building is constructed from stock brick with brick and stone dressings and slate roofs. It is near symmetrical in plan, comprising two storeys in five bays, with single storey half-hipped wings to each side. Underground services arrived here on 1st June 1877 when the District Railway extended its line west of Hammersmith to connect with the L&SWR tracks from Hammersmith (Grove Road) to Richmond. In October of the same year Metropolitan services arrived when the company opened a branch from Shepherd's Bush via Hammersmith (Grove Road) on L&SWR tracks to Richmond. Metropolitan services were withdrawn on 31st December 1906 when the Shepherd's Bush branch was closed. |
