Location :

Grid Ref : SE2063000810

More information : [SE 20630081] CASTLE DIKE [G.T.] (1)

A hill fort, consisting of a single bank and ditch, with diameters
of 100 yds.[N-S] and 60 yds.[E-W]on the flat top of Gilbert Hill
(2) A depression runs across it and there are possible traces of more
than one mound on the south-east. (2-3)

Clearly shown as a univallate enclosure on AP's.(4)

Surveyed at 1/2500. (5)

Survey unchanged. A single ditched enclosure now largely obliterated
by cultivation. No trace of further defensive works, or of an
entrance, are apparent now and, apart from its commanding position,
there is little evidnece to support its classification as a hill fort.
Surface quarrying has occured in the southern section of the
interior but no 'mounds' are visible. (6)

Gilbert Hill listed by Challis and Harding, with reference to
authority 2, as an (Iron Age) curvilinear enclosure in a
commanding but not strong position. (7)

SE 206 008. Gilbert Hill (Langsett). Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 0.40ha. (8)
