Summary : Church, one of the best and most complete Norman village churches in Yorkshire. 1150-1170, 14th and 16th century alterations. West gable and bellcote 1838-39 by RD Chantrell, roof restored by RD Chantrell in 1843, restoration 1879. Coursed squared gritstone, stone slate roofs. Small Norman 2-cell church composed of nave and lower-roofed chancel, bellcote over West end renewed 1839. Five Saxo-Norman grave-markers from under the north-west tower are now in the Leeds City Museum.

Circa 1150-1155. Small Norman 2-cell church with only nave and lower
chancel. Dressed stone and stone slate roof. Small narrow Norman
round-headed windows, those on west and east ends are modern
reconstructions. On the south side of chancel a flat-headed C14
decorated window and in south side of nave 2 flat-headed C16
perpendicular windows. String course. Corbel-frieze with carved
faces and beasts. Small round headed priest's door in south chancel.
Bellcote over west end renewed in 1839. South of nave is fine
portal projecting and gabled, in gable is much weathered relief
sculpture, Christ in Majesty with symbols of evangelists lamb
above, and carved ornament, sumptuous round arch doorway of 4
orders moulded and zig-zag and animal heads. Interior: fine
chancel arch 2 orders with zig-zag, chain of rectangles, and
beak-heads, carved capitals with Baptism, Crucifixion, centaur,
and horseman. Very fine C13 bronze door-ring to south door with
head of monster swallowing man. Stained glass by Henry Gyles of
York in south-west chancel circa 1706 and in vestry (formerly in
east window) 1681. (4)
