Summary : A Bronze Age round barrow situated on undulating land south of the village of Markington. The barrow has an earth and stone mound standing 2.5 metres high. It is round in shape and measures 30 metres in diameter. The mound was surrounded by a ditch which has been filled in and is no longer visible as an earthwork. This feature is visible as an earthwork on historic and recent air photos. Scheduled. |
More information : [SE 2920 6499] TUMULUS [O.E.] (1) B.W.J. Kent of Tatefield Hall is of the opinion that this 'tumulus' is a motte although there is no trace of a bailey. The site is a good defensive position. (2)
Ditch visible on A.P. (3)
Resurveyed at 1/2500. A probable large bowl barrow, 4.0 m. high,in good condition. The apparent ditch visible on A.Ps. is caused by plough encroachment. There are no features to support Kent's classification. (4)
