Ripley Castle has a short tower block which represents probably the whole of the original house, dating from 1548-55. The rest of the house was rebuilt c. 1780, but the gatehouse is of 15th century date. (2)

Ripley Castle. Begun in 1548 but may include earlier work. The tower block represents probably the whole of the original house. In this tower one large upper room with a fine James I plaster ceiling, plastered beams with thick vine-scrolls, thin-ribbed panels. Another original room above. Oriel with mullioned window. A frieze records the dates 1548 and 1555. The rest of the house was rebuilt circa 1780 and there are some elegant interiors. Gothic Revival and embattlements, attributed to Carr of York. owned by Ingilby family since 1330. Cromwell here 1644.
Gatehouse at Ripley. 1548. Stone built embattled tower over entrance archway in which is notice "Parley an Suisse" put up in 1844. (4)
The original tower does not seem to have had a military function. (5)
