(SE 26198439) Coins found AD 1887 (NAT) (2)
Built by the first Lord Latimer who died in 1469, the castle is rectangular in plan, with angle towers and central courtyard. In the 16th century the southern range and the NE and SE angle-towers were largely remodelled. The western range and the NW and SW towers were rebuilt by Lord Burghley after the house passed to him in 1577. The N and E ranges and the chapel in the SE corner are original. (3)
All but the S side is in ruins. Grade 1 building. (4)
Coins were found in the Castle yard in 1887 when some improvements were going on. (5)
The building is as described and the chapel is in normal use. See photograph. The whereabouts of the coins is unknown. (6)

Two Medieval angle towers are visible as structures on air photographs. To the west there is a Medieval/post Medieval avenue visible as cropmarks on air photographs.
The north-west and north-east towers have been plotted at 1:10000 scale as they are in a ruinous state on the latest (2001) oblique photography. Approaching the south-west elevation there is an avenue that is formed by several parallel ditches and banks. At least some of the ditches may have been tree-lined. The central routeway is 6m wide, but in total the avenue measures 41m (to it's visible extents). It is orientated north-east/south-west and visible for 228m. Another avenue survives to the south, utilising the main road leading into the village of Snape. (10-11) |
