More information : (SE 277917) Cloven Hills. Skeletons and pieces of Armour have been dug up here (NAT). (SE 2839090) Skeleton & piece of Armour have been dug up here (NAT) (1) A battle is supposed to have been fought at Cloven Hill, human bones having often been found there. (2) (SE 281913). Mounds and trenches in which large quantities of human bones, fragments of armour, spurs etc were found during drainage work, are in Leases Hall park. They are supposed to be relics of the battle of Northallerton (SE 29 NE 2) but this took place elsewhere (about 6 miles to the north east). Some of the trenches were once known as "Scots Pits" in allusion to the Scots killed in the battle. (Nothing shown on OS 25" 1892). (3)
