Walton Hall

Summary : Site of manor house, built before 1333 and subsequently demolished. Only the medieval water gate survives. A licence to crenellate was granted 1333-4. The site is now occupied by a country house built 1767-8 (SE 31 NE 32).

Licence to crenellate "Walton Mansum" was granted to Thomas de Burgh in 1335.

The old hall was pulled down and replaced by the present building in 1767-8 leaving only the medieval water gate. The gateway has a central and two flanking towers and is surmounted by a cross. (2-4)

Walton Hall, a Georgian mansion, is now in use as a hospital. The Water Gate, at SE 3640 1630, is in good condition. The flanking towers are a 19th century addition. GPs. AO/58/302/8 and AO/58/303/1. (5)

SE 364 163. Walton Hall, unclassified moat. Gatehouse only
survives. Licence to crenellate 1333. Seignorial. (6)

Bridge and Medieval gateway at Walton Hall. Scheduled. (7)

Measured drawings were prepared of the gatehouse of Walton Hall. This structure, originally carrying a drawbridge over the moat, was constructed in accordance with a licence to crenellate of 1333. (8-9)
