Summary : An Odeon cinema opened in 1937 to designs by Whinney, Son and Austen Hall. Now demolsihed, it was constructed from brick with stone dressings, a condition stipulated by the council who did not want a faience clad building on the High Street. To the right of the facade was a tower which displayed a vertical Odeon sign whilst a further neon sign broke up the large expanse of brickwork over the entrance. The design of the interior of the cinema has been attributed to Winifred Evans. In 1971 the cinema was closed and was demolished to make way for a Sainsbury supermarket. |
