Summary : A motte with a mound surviving to a height of 20m and has an overall diameter of up to 30m. The presence of a bailey has been suggested, but the evidence is inconclusive. The motte is reputed to have been the site of the Spofforth Manor House. Scheduled. This earthwork mound is visible on air photos.

Howe Hill, scheduled as a motte and bailey, is nearly 500 ft. in
circumference with flat top 27 ft. by 13 ft. (2-3)

Possible bailey visible. (4)

Published survey (O.S. 25" 1909) correct. A well preserved,
ditchless motte. There are no remains of a bailey, and it is
doubtful whether one ever existed. Marks visible on APs (authy.4.) are farm tracks. (5)
