Summary : The pond was developed from a pre-18th century square pond, possibly a Medieval square moat. It was extended to nearly its present form in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The existing square island with its rectangular pool being retained as a feature.
More information : "Allerton Mauleverer. SE 415584. Jeffrey's map of
1772 shows this small moat, now in lake". (The siting refers to
a water feature shown on OS 1:10 000 1970 at SE 41505846, but
not described). (1)

The Lower Fish Pond was developed from a pre-C18th square pond, possibly medieval in origin. It was extended to nearly its present form in the late C18th or early C19th; the existing square island with its rectangular pool being retained as a feature. (2)
