More information : [SE 5743] Castle [G.T.] (site of) (1)
There is no evidence for a medieval castle at Doncaster, and it would seem that the early references (Leland, etc.) are to the Roman fort [SE 50 SE 7]. (2)
The site is now covered by modern development. Recent excavations for a new road in the vicinity produced no evidence for a castle at the published position. (3)
Doncaster Castle. Excavations in the early 1970s uncovered the remains of two baileys, either an inner and outer or a ringwork with a later bailey. There is no archaeological evidence for a motte, only a bibliographic reference in Camden. It was probably built before 1068 and may have been destroyed on the orders of Henry II at the end of the civil war. (4)
