Doncaster Castle

Hob Uid: 55892
Location :
Doncaster
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SE5743003530
Summary : A ringwork and bailey, or pair of baileys, was revealed by excavation in the early 1970's, probably built by 1068 and destroyed in Henry II's reign.
More information : [SE 5743] Castle [G.T.] (site of) (1)

There is no evidence for a medieval castle at Doncaster, and it would seem that the early references (Leland, etc.) are to the Roman fort [SE 50 SE 7]. (2)

The site is now covered by modern development. Recent excavations for a new road in the vicinity produced no evidence for a castle at the published position. (3)

Doncaster Castle. Excavations in the early 1970s uncovered the remains of two baileys, either an inner and outer or a ringwork with a later bailey. There is no archaeological evidence for a motte, only a bibliographic reference in Camden. It was probably built before 1068 and may have been destroyed on the orders of Henry II at the end of the civil war. (4)

Listed by Cathcart King as a vanished castle (5)
