Engine House

Hob Uid: 1109371
Location :
Greater London Authority
Tower Hamlets
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TQ3342080540
Summary : The Engine House at the Tower of London was built in c.1862 when the previous location of the hydraulic engines in the south east turret of St Thomas Tower had caused the collapse of some stonework due to the vibrations it generated. Salvin was called upon to design a specific building at the main western entrance to the Tower of London. In 1914 it was suggested that the building be enlarged and converted to a great Tea House but the outbreak of the First World War prevented this. The Engine House has now become the Tower shop.
