More information : (SJ 99522255) Essex Bridge (NR). (1)

Essex Bridge, Grade 1, is probably 16th century and perhaps the least altered old bridge in Staffordshire(2). Chetwyn, writing in 1679 (3), stated that "Shutborough" was formerly joined to Haywood by a wooden bridge "which, being ruinous, was in ye last age rebuilt with stone and contains 43 arches". Some of these arches possibly formed a causeway as the present structure has 14 arches spanning a total distance of 100 yds. It is only 4 ft between the parapets.

It is recorded that the bridge was repaired in 1583(4). (2-4)

Essex Bridge is a 16th or 17th century stone horse bridge of 14 arches as described above. See photograph. (5)

No change. Not outstanding. (6)
