Gilling Castle; late 14th century with a reconstruction of the upper floors in the late 16th century and the addition of two wings in the early 18th century. Classrooms were added in 1929 when it became part of Ampleforth College. Grade II. Plan. (2-4)
Gilling Castle is as described by the previous authorities. It is still in use as a preparatory school run by the Benedictine Order, for Ampleforth College. Published survey (25") revised. (5)
SE 611 768. The basement of the 18th century building is all that survives of a large tower house built by Thomas Etton, who died in 1394 or 1395. It formed the ground floor of the original building. SE 6106 7705. (6)
