Moated site with three islands, of which one internal division has been destroyed since 1850. (5)
The moat is visible as earthworks on air photographs. (6)
Earthworks of medieval moat visible on air photographs. The site dates from the 11th century and comprises a large, raised platform surrounded on all four sides by a moat. There is an original entrance in the centre of the northern moat arm and a second entrance on the opposite side, though this may not be original. The remains of two interior moat channels survive in the south west corner of the moated island, one of which is interpreted as a fishpond. The house which currently occupies the island is 18/19th century in date but is believed to stand on earlier foundations, possibly dating from the 16th century. Scheduled. (7) |
