SE 7092 4923. Moated site at St Lois Farm. Scheduled RSM No 21193. A large sub-rectangular moated site enclosed by a waterlogged moat. The island is sub-divided by a ditch, now dry, which runs N-S. The area of the island to the W of this ditch measures 30m N-S by 20m E-W; the area to the E measures 50m N-S by 35m E-W and is more irregularly shaped. The dividing ditch is 20m deep and 7m wide. The moat has been infilled at the SE corner, probably when the adjacent farm complex was constructed in this area. Elsewhere it remains visible as an earthwork and is between 7m and 10m wide and up to 2m deep. A pond has been cut into SE corner of the monument, just N of the farmyard. This feature is considered to be of medieval origin, but has been expanded and has disturbed part of the island and moat here. Earthen banks survive immediately outside the W and N arms of the moat; they are between 0.3m and 0.5m high and 5m wide.
The monument was owned in the Middle Ages by the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland. A licence to crenellate was granted in 1293. Building debris has been found on the E part of the island. (5)
Part of the moat described by the previous authorities was seen as earthworks on early air photographs (1946). The rest of the moat as described was obscured by trees. (6) |
