Ana Cross

Summary : Bronze Age round barrow 18m in diameter and 1.2m high., which has a stone cross on it. It was surmounted by a wayside cross marking the route from Lastingham to Rosedale Priory. The present cross replaced the Mediaeval cross in 1949 when the original was moved to Lastingham Church. The cross is listed Grade II, and the barrow is scheduled.

A stony mound 60 ft N-S, 56 ft E-W, 3-4 ft high, with a central
depression 8 ft wide and 1 ft deep. The original cross, in
Lastingham crypt (1949), was replaced by the 19th century cross
standing on the NW side of the mound. (6)

Cross in very good condition. Known locally as Ana Cross, not
One Howe Cross. (7)

A heather and turf covered round barrow, 17m in diameter and 1m high,
disturbed at the centre. Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Ana Cross, which stands on the NW arc of the barrow, is a prominent
landmark, but is clearly modern being composed of massive ashlar
blocks. See photograph. (8)
