More information : [SJ 9258 2318] Site of East Gate [GT]. (1)
A copy of a plan of Stafford made between 1593 and 1611 shows the East Gate as a substantial stone building with a central archway leading to a stone bridge (SJ 92 SW 26) over the ditch. (2)
The arch of the East Gate has not long since been removed, and one side of a groove for a portcullis may yet be traced. (3)

Stafford East Gate. Scheduled. (5)
A fragment of the north wall of the East Gate formed the wall of a shop at the junction of Back Walls North with Lammascote Road at `A'. In 1939 the shop was removed for road widening and the fragment of wall taken down and re-erected about 20m to the north. (6)
SJ 9258 2319. The surviving part of the East Gate is a wall 6m long and 5m-6m high, set up against 118 Back Walls North. At its eastern end is a groove, perhaps for a portculis. See photograph. (7)
No 118 has been demolished and a car park now occupies the site; otherwise no change. (An isolated piece of wall is shown in the position described, SJ 9258 2232, on the upublished OS 1:1250 survey document 1978 (see illustration)). (8)

The East Gate was mentioned in the later 12th century. It was taken down c1800 but part of the north side left standing. That was moved for road widening in 1939 and set against the end wall of a cottage further along North Walls. When the cottage was demolished in 1964 it was left free standing. (10)
