Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 620445

Hob Uid: 620445
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Dartmoor Forest
Grid Ref : SX6318107198
Summary : Standing stones (3)
More information : Three standing stones widely spaced and somewhat inconclusive. Three other standing stones of gate-post type, all grouped together. (1)

In the centre of the enclosure are three standing stones... They are not of historic import, having in all probability once supported the roof of a linhay used in lambing time. (2)

SX 63187198. A line of three upright posts and slabs along the 331m contour of the steep S slope of Joan Ford's Newtake. The stones, between 1.3m and 1.6m high are spaced at about 1m intervals with slight erosion hollows containing packing stones on their S sides. There are no signs of the stones having been cut from larger blocks or shaped in any way though the central one carries an undecipherable inscription of more than one letter on its S face. These stones cannot be associated with the surrounding prehistoric field system
SX 67 SW 55, nor with the three other stones noted by authority 1 which form part of that system. Their use in a linhay as suggested by Hemery (2) is also unlikely, but that they were ignored by Worth, Burnard, etc, suggests they knew the stones had no archaeological significance. (3)
