More information : (SE 87209338) Standing Stones (NR). (1) Three stones, about 6 ft high, the remains of a circle 18 yds diameter. (2) Of the three published standing stones `A' at SE 87199337 and `B' at SE 87199339 are free standing, while `C' at SE 87209338 is used as a gate post. `A' 0.7 x 0.3m in section at ground level and 1.9m high is much-weathered and leaning. `B', 0.6 x 0.4m at ground level and 1.0m high, is upright but appears to have had its top broken off. `C', 0.7 x 0.5m in section and 1.3m high, appears to have been roughly squared possibly for its present use, and must be considered a doubtful standing stone. An additional stone, `D', occurs in the old field bank at SE 87209336. Much-weathered and leaning, it is 0.6 x 0.5m in section at ground level and 1.4m high. The suggestion that the stones are the remains of a circle 18 yards in diameter is not borne out by their placing. See photographs. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (3) Remains of stone circle near Blakey Topping, 18 yards diameter. Two or three hollows in the ground indicate the position of other stones, some of which are serving as gate posts nearby. Others have been broken up to help build a wall. (4) SE 873934 Listed by Burl as of "uncertain status" possibly a plain ring 16.5m diameter. (5) SE 872934 Stanhope White says there are five standing stones, the remains of a circle. (6)
SE 872 934. Blakey standing stones. Scheduled no. NY/889. (7)
It is believed that there would originally have been more stones in the alignment, but that these have been removed as a result of ground clearance or for reuse in field boundaries. Rather than forming a circle, it is now thought that these additional stones would have continued the curving line formed by the three in-situ stones or would have been sited in one of two parallel rows 18 metres apart, one of which is defined by the two surviving western stones.
