Summary : The North Yorkshire Moors Railway opened from Pickering to Whitby in 1835-6, originally using a rope-worked inclined plane between Grosmont and Goathland which was replaced in 1865 by a deviation line. The incline was closed, but a branch from Grosmont to Beck Hole remained open, and was reopened to passenger traffic in 1908 for summer holiday traffic, although it closed permanently to passengers in 1914. Freight traffic continued on the Beck Hole branch until 1951 when the branch closed and was dismantled. Services were withdrawn in 1965, but the line between Grosmont and Pickering was reopened as a preserved railway in 1973. The original tunnel at Grosland opened in 1835 was replaced by a new tunnel in 1847.
More information : (SE 845754 - SE 796842) dismantled railway (NAT)
(SE 796842 - NZ 827053) North Yorks Moors Railway (NAT) (1)

The preserved North Yorkshire Moors Railway, re-opened in 1973,
between Grosmont and Pickering forms a substantial part of the
former Whitby & Pickering Railway opened 1835-36 which had a
rope-worked incline of 1 in 15 gradient at Goathland (shown as
Incline (NAT) between NZ 82180204 and NZ 83260159 on OS 6" 1853).
In 1845 the Whitby & Pickering was connected at Pickering with
the York & North Midland Railway branch from Rillington (SE
845754), thus providing a through route from Malton to Whitby.
The rope-worked incline at Goathland was replaced in 1865 by a
deviation line (NZ 82680475) to SE 84669921) although a portion
of the original track between Esk Valley (Grosmont Deviation
Junction at NZ 82680475 on OS 6" 1958) and Beck Hole (NZ 82050213)
at the foot of the old incline was retained.

This short section was re-opened for summer passenger traffic
from Whitby between 1908 and 1914 with a sparse freight service
over part of the line until 1951. The passenger service between
Malton via Pickering to Whitby was withdrawn in 1965 and the
track between Rillington and Pickering dismantled. (see plan
for details). (2)
