C18/early C20 gardens, simplified in later C20, 2ha. Walled kitchen garden C18, 30m to south west of house. Though an enclosed formal garden is recorded at Preston Manor in 1617, the present gardens are C18 in origin. Remains of a ha ha to south, possbly late C18. Further modifications mid-1970s following the loss of the western part of the garden for road improvements. (2)
Public park covering an area of 30 hectares, situated to the north of Bright town centre. The park originated as private gardens and landscape park to Preston Manor. The park was created during the 18th century, formal gardens were documented here from 1617. The present gardens date from the 18th century with 19th and early-mid 20th century alterations. The public park was created between 1883 and 1884 by James Shrives and Philip Lockwood, it was opened to the public on the 8th November 1884. The park was extended in 1923 to provide sporting facilities and additional gardens. The gardens were extended in 1928-29. Preston Manor's private gardens became part of the park in 1933. The Rock garden was laid out in 1936. (3) |
