SJ 597 111. Charlton Castle. Scheduled. (8)
SJ 59751119. The moated island measures approximately 55 metres by 70 metres and is surrounded by a partially waterlogged moat. The curtain wall which once ran around the island is now represented by a discontinuous bank up to 0.6 metre high. The distribution of the collapsed and upstanding masonry remains on the island indicate that the castle consisted of ranges of buildings arranged around a central courtyard. South east of the moated site lies a waterfilled fishpond measuring roughly 30 metres by 92 metres. Scheduled. (9)
Listed by Cathcart King. (10)
APs taken in 1995 suggested an area of ridge and furrow between the moat and the fishpond. Field investigation has shown theses features to be later frainage ditches. (11) |
