Summary : Bowl barrow with a primary cremation and a secondary inhumation, surviving as an earthwork.

Round barrow at SJ 570713 on Gallowsclough Hill, excavated in
1960. It measured 45' 6" East/West diameter and 43' North/South,
and was found to contain a primary cremation burial without urn
below natural soil surface, in a position 7' S.S.W. of the true
centre of the barrow as defined by the kerb.

The barrow also contained an incomplete secondary burial,
probably part lost by denudation by both natural erosion and
ploughing.

A turf covered round barrow of 24.0m diam., and 1.0m high.
Published survey (25") correct. (3)

Although now under the plough the barrow remains to a height of 1.0m. Published survey (1:2500) correct. (4)

SJ 5700 7134. Gallowsclough Cob bowl barrow. Scheduled RSM No 22594.
An oval-shaped earthen mound up to 0.8m high with max dimensions of
30m x 23m. (5)

The feature was mapped from lidar imagery as part of the 'Cheshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project: the Chester environs' in 2019. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery in northof the parish of Oakmere. The site is extant on the latest 2016 aerial photography. (6-7)
