More information : SU 6284 0859. Southwick Priory Fishponds. These fishponds are possibly unique, the lower pond complex comprising four ponds within a large pond. They appear to date from an early stage of the Priory's establishment. (1-4)
Excavations in 1985 showed that the lowest of the ponds date to the early part of the Priory's foundation, and was subsequently rebuilt , possibly with a heightended dam and enlarged area. It was rebuilt again circa 1700, but possibly earlier in the 16th century. At some time in the post-Mediaeval the upper pond was either reformed or built anew. The original layout of the ponds at Southwick can only be guessed at. (5) |
