Summary : Remains of Chapel of Ease at Creswell. The Chapel was originally maintained by the 13th Prebendary of the Royal Free Chapel of St Mary, Stafford. It became a Prebend of St Mary's in 1346 although it is mentioned in a grant of 1334.The church stands in an open field, and has long been in ruins. The only portions which remain are the North and East walls of the chancel. The former has two Early English lancet windows, and the latter is apparently of the 15th century. |
More information : (SJ 89602605) Chapel (NR) (Remains of). (1) Remains of Chapel of Ease at Creswell. The Chapel was originally maintained by the C13th Prebendary of the Royal Free Chapel of St Mary, Stafford. It became a Prebend of St Mary's in 1346 (a) although it is mentioned in a grant of 1334. (2) "Creswell. The church stands in an open field, and has long been in ruins. The only portions which remain are the N and E walls of the chancel. The former has two Early English lancet windows, and the latter is apparently of the 15th century". (3) All that remains of the chapel are the north and east walls of the chancel standing to a height of circa 4.0m. There are two internally splayed 13th century lancets in the north wall and the lower part of the jambs of a large east window survive. See GP. The chancel measures 8.0 x 6.5m and traces of ? robber trenches indicate that the nave was 11.0 x 8.5m. (4) No change. (5) Parish Church remains. Grade II.
