More information : (SJ 8788 4517) Cross (NR) (1) Two pieces of broken shaft of a 10th-11th c cross were found in the graveyard of Stoke Church in 1876. (2) Pre-Norman Cross (remains of). The description in Authority 2 is accurate. The ornament on this cross shaft is typical Saxon or pre-Norman work. The shaft has been set up in a modern socket-stone and base, upon which is inscribed: "This fragment of a pre-Norman cross identified by Chas Lynam FSA was erected near its original position in the 25th year of the reign of HM King George V by P W L Adams FSA". The cross has been moved from its position as shown on OS 1:2500 Rev 1937 and is now situated at SJ 8788 4517. Correct as shown on 1:1250 seen at Stoke Town Group Office. (3) No change. Published 1:1250 Survey correct. (4) Churchyard Cross SJ 8745 4/65 2.10.51. II Pre-Norman. A fragment of the shaft only, approximately 4 ft high. Of roughly square section with spiral enrichments on each face. Re-erected near original site, mounted on C19 pedestal and railed.(5) SJ 879452. Saxon Cross in parish churchyard. Scheduled. (6)
