Location :
Devon

Grid Ref : SX6453059780
Summary : One of two cairns north-east of Harford Moor Gate
More information : Many examples of prehistoric funerary monuments are preserved on Dartmoor, mostly dating to the Bronze Age (c 2500 to 500BC) To celebrate or commemorate the dead, mounds of earth or stone were piled in roughly hemispherical shape over the burial, which was sometimes contained in a small rectangular structure, or cist, made of stone slabs. Some monuments also include kerbstones marking the edge of the mound and a surrounding ditch. This cairn, one of two north east of Harford Moor Gate is 7.5 m in diameter and 0.4 m in height, it is turf-covered and has traces of a retaining kerb. (1)

(SX64605977). Grass covered cairn, 7.5 x 7.8m in diameter, hollow in the centre, possible traces of retaining circle. (2)

The cairn is at circa 296mOD and appears to be mutilated. It measures circa 7m in diameter and is circa 0,6m high with a central excavation. A small waste heap lies to the SW. There are 2 contiguous stones in the SW of the cairn, but nothing else to suggest a retaining circle. (SEE GP). Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. (3)
