Summary : A late medieval church, largely rebuilt around 1640 with later alterations in the early 18th century and the late 19th century. Excavations ahead of drain lying revealed evidence of an earlier church below the partial remains of the present 15th centuny nave. This work suggested a period of time had elapsed between the demolition of the lower church and the building of the present chapel. It was finally made redundant in 1976 and invested in the Redundant Churches Fund. The church may have been rebuilt after 1530 when the Grantham family purchased the Goltho estate, although the joints of the roof structure suggest a date earlier than 1500. The plan consists of a 17th century nave with some 15th century elements surviving, early 18th century chancel and bell turrent and upper gable elements dating to the late 19th century. It is built in brick with plain tiled roofing. Set in the floor is a coffin lid with an incised cross dated 1507 and two 17th century gravestones in the nave floor. |

Excavation in advance of drain-laying uncovered the stone foundations of an earlier church underneath the 15th century nave, comprising a roughly coursed limestone footing with a chamfered sandstone plinth beneath. The footings broadened and extended W beyond the W end of the present nave; presumably the present nave lies on the site of the earlier chancel, with the original nave further W under the present graveyard. The excavation indicated a time lapse between the demolition of the former church and the construction of the surviving building, which seems to have been erected after the desertion of the village.
