Summary : A Roman cemetery consisting of 50 graves including two lead caskets and pottery was recorded before destruction by road works in 1971. It was associated with the Roman fort.
More information : (Area centred NY 796139) Realignment of the A685 in 1971 cut through the western part of the Roman cemetery to Verterae, the northern boundary of which lies south of the Augill Beck (NY 795 140). Heavy foundation stones suggest that the Roman road (RR82) may lie between this beck and the cemetery. The western boundary roughly follows the centre of the new road and the southern limit is north of the Augill Castle road (NY795 137). The site extends some distance east of the road works. Some 50 graves were noted and recorded before destruction; two lead caskets and several pottery fragments were found. (1) Full report on the excavations of 1971-2. (2) No further information. (3)
