More information : Carmelite Friary, A.D. 1290. [centred at TA 09812865]. (1)
In 1289, the Dean of York applied for a licence to grant messuage in Hull to the Carmelite Friars, and in 1293 they held land on the South side of Monkgate (later Blackfriargate). By 1304, their numbers had so increased that Edward I offered them land at Milncroft, at that time outside the town, in return for the land at Monkgate. The Friary was to keep its church and houses, removing them to the new site. Papal authorisation was granted in 1307 and the new church consecrated in 1311. The new site lay within the circuit of the town walls when they were erected in 1420, on the South side of Whitefriargate near Beverley Gate. The Friary was dissolved in 1539. (2) |
