Summary : Excavations in 1967 uncovered a Roman road measuring 15ft wide and paved with packed chalk and flints, 2ft deep and aligned NNW to SSE. Two Roman coins and pottery were found, Saxo-Norman pottery and a Saxon comb. The finds are in Bereton School.

and Saxo-Norman pottery from a site known as Parker's Close.
Further excavations at TA03752210 directed by Mr G F Bryant of
the Workers Educational Association revealed a Roman Road, large
quantities of RB pottery part of a Saxon comb and a 1st century
Roman coin.
Nine sites yielding RB pottery have been recorded in the area to
the NE of St Peter's Church and bounded on the N by East Grove and
on the S by Saxon Close. (1)

The excavation by Bereton School took place at TA 0361 2211. The
finds are in the possession of the school. Other RB pottery and
Roman finds from the area are in Mr G Bryants possession. (2)

A bronze coin of Carausius (AD 287-293) found at TA 0375 2210. (3)

The Roman road located by G F Bryant during 1967-8 was 15 ft.
wide and paved with packed chalk and flints. It was aligned
NNW-SSE and a 2ft. deep ditch ran parallel to it on its western
side. (4)
