Summary : Franciscan friary originally founded pre-1267, and probably within the town walls, but moved to land granted to the friars around the chapel of St Elena, near Westwood, in 1297. It was in poor condition by the mid 14th century, and was restored and rebuilt in 1352. Dissolved in 1539. Over 300 inhumations, associated with Mediaeval objects, were found in Westwood in the 19th century, and probably indicate the location of the friary. |
