SU6652. Remains of 16th and 17th century formal gardens at Basing House. Features include walled terraced gardens situated within the castle bailey, a garden house of circa 1530-60 and a bowling green. There is also a 16th/17th century gate house landscaped as a folly. The fishponds have Tudor brick revetting and remains of a sluice. (2)

The earthworks of the mount and bailey have been in the first place adapted to the terraces and walled gardens of a 16th c country house and in the next century hastily strengthened by lines of outworks and ditches during the civil wars. They are situated to the north, on the slope of the valley and make a most picturesque setting to the site. [Full description] (3)
