Sil Howe

Hob Uid: 29312
Location :
North Yorkshire
Scarborough
Goathland
Grid Ref : NZ8519002830
Summary : Site of a tumulus and associated Mediaeval boundary cross.
More information : (NZ 85190283) Sil Howe (NR) (1)

Silhoue Cross, a boundary cross once sited at Sil Howe; removed before 1817. (2)

Tumulus no longer extant. (3)

No remains. (4)

A barrow at Silhow, about 34 yards circumference and a little over
4ft high is entered in James Ruddocks memorandum book without further particulars. (Ruddock excavated barrows in this area between 1857-8 - see NZ 80 SE 25) (5)

(NZ 85190282) Sil Howe (NR) (Site of) (NAT) (6)

The vestigial remains of a mound were found during the scheduling visit. It is predominantly earthen with some stone visible where sheep erosion had removed the vegetation. If this is the remains of the round barrow it has been severely truncated to the south and north.
The evidence suggest the site of Sil Howe has been substantially destroyed. It has not, therefore, been recommended for scheduling, although there may still be surviving archaeological deposits which will merit investigation in the event of any future threat. (7)
