Vessel left Liverpool 14.04, encountering thick fog pm on 15.04, sounding siren, but speed not reduced; a full set of sails were set. Ship struck at 12.30am, 16.04, and heeled over. By the time two boats had been launched and manned, her bow had swung clear and sunk in deep water and the deck was covered. Two gigs from Bryher appeared alongside within minutes, attracted by the ship's siren, and took them in tow, arriving at Bryher at 3.30am, then St. Mary's; the crew lost all their belongings. Less than 32 hours out on her maiden voyage, the ZELDA's cargo consisted of machinery, rice, and bale goods. Returning to the wreck that same morning, the Bryher men reported the vessel broken in 2 or 3 pieces. The bow lies in 108ft, the remainder in 48ft. A party of divers arrived on 18.04 to examine the wreck, leaving two days later. Salvage commenced, and by 15.08 3100 bags of rice, 118 bales of cotton goods, 208 tierces of lard, 22 barrels of oil, copper and tin were saved. (1)(13)
16-APR 11.10am `The ZELDA lies in 10 fathoms on Maiden Bower extreme NW of Scilly in a very exposed position'. 4pm `The ZELDA has parted amidships, bows in 10 fathoms, stern in 5 fathoms at low water.' (2)
15-OCT-1970: located Maiden Bower west of Bryher in position 49 56 50N 006 23 30W , most of cargo soon recovered by divers. Well broken up, lying roughly N/S, bows to N. Stern is in 35ft of water and bows in 90ft.
