Summary : Two 19th century boundary stones, marking the boundary between the manors of Glenthorne and Oare.
More information : Stone SS 83004454 (NAT), Stone SS 83024449 (NAT) (1)

Post Medieval boundary stone at SS 83004454.
Ground photos (2) Supplied to the NAR (1-4)

Centred at SS 83004454. Two stones, 90m apart, are situated on gently sloping ground on a NW spur of Porlock Allotment at 410 m OD.

(A) SS 82984458. A thin rectangular slatey slab 0.28m high, 0.2m wide E-W and 0.05m thick in an erosion hollow 1.6m in diameter and 0.3m deep. It appears to have been broken as two pieces 0.45m and 0.40m long and both 0.02m wide and 0.05 thick lie in the hollow on the S side, so originally the stone may have been up to 1.3m high.

(B) SS 83024449. An upright earthfast slab 0.65m high, 0.03m wide ENE-WNW and 0.1m thick set in an erosion hollow 2m diameter 0.02m deep.

The stones were set up in the 19th century to define the property boundary between the Manors of Glenthorne and Oare (auth 4) (5).

A large rather amorphous mound lies some 15m to the NW of stone B, at SS 8301 4450. The mound measures some 8.5m in diameter and is 0.8m high. It is peaty, with little stone and is most likely to be associated with peat cutting. The mound was recorded using differential GPS as part of the EH survey of Mill Hill for the ENPA (6,7).
