Summary : Obelisk situated in the Deer Park at Stowe, re-built from the 'guglio' in the Octagon Lake in 1754 and dedicated to General Wolfe in 1759, and took the name Wolfe's Obelisk after this. The Obelisk is built on a circular mound, 20 metres in diameter and 1 metre high. The structure was included in an English Heritage survey of Stowe Park in 2001, however, as it was scaffolded during the time of the survey detailed measurements could not be taken. |

Wolfe's Obelisk, a tall ashlar stone obelisk on a pedestal, probably modelled circa.1760 on Vanbrugh's 'guglio' of 1722 which was located in the centre of the Octagon Lake at SP678370. Grade I.(2)
The Obelisk was re-built from the 'guglio' in the Octagon Lake in 1754. It is situated on one of the highest parts of the Deer Park at Stowe, to the north of the house. It was dedicated to General Wolfe in 1759 and took the name Wolfe's Obelisk after this. The Obelisk is deliberately located on an axis with the Temple of Concord and Victory and is also a focal point in the view down the Silverstone Great Riding.
The Obelisk is built on a circular mound, c 20m in diameter and c 1m high. The building was scaffolded during the time of the survey and detailed measurements could not be taken. The planting and pond associated with the monument are described under SP 63 NE 90 and SP 63 NE 91(3).
The site was recorded at a scale of 1:2500 as part of the EH survey of the park at Stowe for the National Trust (4).
