Summary : Group of three Bronze age round barrows surviving as earthworks. Excavation in 1956 revealed one with central cist and stone kerb. Cremation burial, pottery and urns found
More information : (NZ 6077 0332) Tumulus (NR) ('A'). (1)

('A') Examined and trenched by R Close in 1956. Mound measuring 45 ft
overall N-S: 47 ft E-W: 3 to 3ft 6 ins high. Not much sign of
disturbance; but very eroded. Little trace of burning or burnt
stones; a few flints found.

('B' NZ 6075 0329) Mound measuring 34 ft in diameter; 2-3 ft high;
central depression. In the centre Close found a circle of stone
walling 2 - 3 courses high, 8 ft internal diameter, 3 ft thick, with
a 4 ft gap at the SW. Just S of the centre was the remains of a
disturbed cist, a crude 12" square composed of 4 stones set on edge.
Scattered around were pieces of calcined bone and 3 pieces of
pottery, red-brown sandy ware, part of the overhanging
rim of an urn, with a raised cordon of zig-zag pattern. In
the mound were several stones, some set on edge, probably part of the
stone kerb.

('C) NZ 6074 0327. Very mutilated mound 25 - 27 ft in diameter; large
depression in centre; west side removed for road metal years ago.
Trenched by R Close. Turf stack over natural boulders and large
stones. Scraps of calcined bone a fragments of pottery found,
probably urn ware. (2)

'A', NZ 6080 0335 'B', 6078 0333 'C', NZ 6077 0331. Three barrows
generally as described, although the structural details of 'B' are
now obscured.

Surveyed at 1:10 000. (3)

NZ 607 032. Burton Howe round cairns. Scheduled No NY/1043. (4)

NZ 6078 0333. Three round barrows 60m north of Burton Howe.
The south-west barrow has a mound standing 1m high and 13m in diameter. The central barrow has a mound 0.8m high and 9m in diameter and the northern barrow mound is 1m high and 15m in diameter. The barrows were partly excavated by R S Close in 1956.
No ditches were recorded surrounding the mounds.
