Church Of St Oswald

Summary : Built in the 12th century, extended in the 13th and 15th centuries and altered in the 17th century. Built of sandstone with a slate roof. The east wall of the chancel once formed the west wall of a detached building to the east of the church. The chancel was extended to incorporate this structure in the 17th century. Documentary sources suggest that this building may have been a vicar's pele.

'The church of St. Oswald, Dean ... has undergone nothing in the way of modern restoration.... The outstanding feature of the exterior is its ... double bell-turret... over the chancel arch'. The lower parts of the walls, and the south doorway are of the thirteenth century. None of the original windows remain, having been replaced during the fourteenth century and by later alterations. The buttresses at the north west of the church and the chancel roof were erected during the 14th century restoration. Further alterations were made in the sixteenth century.(2)

Further architectural discoveries were made during replastering in 1967.(4)

Built in the 12th century, extended in the 13th and 15th centuries and altered in the 17th century. Possibly formerly attached to a vicar's pele. Built of sandstone with a slate roof. Listed Grade I. (6)

The east wall of the chancel once formed the west wall of a detached building standing to the east of the church. The chancel was extended to incorporate this building in the 17th century. Documentary sources suggest that this structure may have been a vicar's pele. (7)
