Brownrigg Milefortlet 22

Hob Uid: 8970
Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Crosscanonby
Grid Ref : NY0570038900
Summary : The buried remains of Brownrigg Roman milefortlet 22, part of the Roman frontier defences along the Cumbrian coast. The milefortlet was originally of turf and timber construction and is located on a low cliff near Maryport Golf Course.
More information : [NY 0568 3890] Roman milefortlet no 22 excavated in 1962. The ditch was about five feet deep and the rampart 31 feet wide and 2 feet 6 inches high with a sort of pavement of flat stones on the top. Inside were flagged floors with no occupation debris on them, sherds of Hadrianic pottery being found between the stones. The ditch appears to have been filled in and the fort dismantled after 140 AD. (1-2)

In August 1968 a further excavation revealed an entrance 6 ft wide in the rampart facing the cliff, the natural advantage of which made a ditch unnecessary. Along the other three sides a horseshoe shaped ditch was separated by a berm 9 ft wide from the ramparts. A gravel road along the cliff top turned into the fort and divided the interior which measured 68 ft by 58 ft. (3)

(NY 0568 3890) Brownrigg mile fortlet, scheduled. (4)

Located accurately from Bellhouses's excavation plan to NY 05703890. No ground traces; site occupied by a built-up golf green. (5)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6)
